And after she’s heard the song of this child, she comes back to the man who will be the child’s father, and teaches it to him. And then, when they make love to physically conceive the child, some of that time they sing the song of the child, as a way to invite it.” —Attributed to the Himba of Namibia

Since I first heard of this birth story, I loved the intention behind it. Calling in a soul, inviting a child into your life, actively creating a family with your partner – these ideas intrigued me and ignited a question in my soul.

My own parents talked of how they “planned” for me and I loved growing up with the thought that not only was I wanted – but planned for. In today’s world, intentional conception is common and usually is centered on what to eat, how much to exercise, and how to best take care of the physical body. Most of this focuses on the mother-to-be; only recently has it begun to include the role of the father or partner.

However, as the story above illustrates, conscious conception is more than just the physical body. It includes the emotional, mental, spiritual, career, financial, and relationship components of family life as well. I find many couples are completely comfortable addressing the physical demands of getting pregnant and supporting the pregnancy and starting a family. Some discuss the emotional, financial, and career aspects of family life; very few discuss all. These discussions are vital for a new, young family. In my opinion, bringing a child into the world is the most transformational event in a human’s life. Nothing prepares you for the love, responsibility, and frequently overwhelming change to life as becoming a parent. From my perspective and experience, typical American culture focuses on the getting pregnant and tends to ignore the new family once the baby is here. Americans tend to parent in isolation – whether by choice or by default. And many feel shocked at what parenting and family life are actually like.

Many parents are angry, sad, and overwhelmed. And while there are many contributions to these feelings, I believe one is that we as a culture do not discuss the actual soul work required in parenting. A well-known adage about parenting sums it up: The quickest way to enlightenment is to have a child. Why? Because no one will push your buttons or make you ask the hard questions like your child. Knowing this going into parenthood can make some of those hard times a little easier. Beginning the conversation before conception with your partner makes it easier to continue the conversation once the family has begun. It’s one of my favorite topics and one that I find a lot of my parent friends enjoy as well. Who is this little soul? How can we best support it? What lessons do we have to teach each other? Why do they push my buttons so effectively? The creation of family is a dance. One improvised second by second by all members of the family. It’s a dance that warrants discussion and thought before pregnancy – as it will be continually fine-tuned and tweaked for the rest of your life.

Yesterday Stacey and I spent an enlightening afternoon at a meeting covering environmental toxins and how pervasive they are. (Many thanks to Standard Process and Larry Welsh LAc .) We need to be much more proactive about chemicals in our bodies because they will disrupt our delicate hormonal balance. Along with the depressing news we received a lot of great information on how to heal the gut. I know, I know, you are asking yourself, why did they learn about how to heal the gut after hearing about endocrine disrupting chemicals in our bodies/environment?

Well it turns out that the first step in any detoxification of the body begins with a healthy gut. There are some simple things you can do to give your intestinal tract the healthy bacteria it needs to even begin the detox process.

1) eat Potato Leek Soup, with onions. They all grow in the ground, so they have dirt in and on them. When grown organically, or even better bio-dynamically you will get tiny microbes and bacteria with the these veggies. The key is to cook them gently, especially the onions and leeks. Cook them until just translucent, then pull them off the burner. When you mix in the potatoes don’t bring it all to a raucous rolling boil, rather just get it to the temperature where you can stick your finger in and its hot, but not scalding and then run it through the blender. If you get it too hot the bacteria will all die. Here is a good recipe

2) Eat fermented foods: yogurt, sauerkraut, kim chi, kefir, kombucha. I was taught to take a tablespoon of sauerkraut juice first thing in the am to support the gut. The microbes last two weeks so by doing this once or twice per week you’re guaranteed to always be giving your body new good bacteria to replace the dead and dying ones.

3) Eat various types of fiber, red, purple, orange and green veggies. Whole grains like millet and oats.

4) Eat butter or ghee.

5) Come in or look up MediHerb’s Weed and Feed Protocol. Treating Multiple Sclerosis with Chinese Medicine

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease for which there is no known cure. A person suffering from multiple sclerosis may show demyelination in the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves due to overactive antibodies.

Physical symptoms range from person to person, as does the severity of the disease. According to a paper published by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation, “this variability has led some to conclude that MS might be a syndrome or spectrum of different disorders rather than a single disease.” (MSIF, 2009) Naturally, a successful treatment for MS must be highly individualized, with a focus on relief from symptoms and preventing progression of the disease. Unfortunately, biomedical treatments for MS can come with significant side effects, and may not always be effective. In acupuncture, the meridian is a system of twelve lines that connect acupoints, or points used in acupuncture practice. They are regarded as the channels through which all qi (energy) flows. As an acupuncturist, it is my job to ‘tap into’ these meridians using needles. I help your body move energy to its proper place.

Meridians are all over the place, and each is governed by a specific organ. This month, we will focus on one of the most overlooked meridians in the body: the gallbladder.

Consider: our culture is quick to dedicate entire months to heart, lung, and brain health. But when do we ever hear about ‘National Gall Bladder Awareness Month’ (FYI: it’s in February)? In fact it seems like the only time we ever hear about the gallbladder is when there is something wrong with it. But there is much more to it than western culture cares to acknowledge.

This organ works closely with the lymphatic system to clear out toxic by-products of the metabolism from the muscular system. Without it, we would be filled up with all kinds of toxins! Its energy provides us with muscular strength and vitality. In other words, the gallbladder essentially eliminates muscular fatigue and aches. It also directly affects both the quality and length of sleep.

Eastern medicine believes that all organs of the body are responsible for not only their anatomic functions but emotions and emotional issues as well. Thus, the gallbladder plays a large role in courage and initiative. Remember the old English phrase, ‘a lot of gall’? People didn’t just say it because it had a ring to it. People with a weak gallbladder are indecisive, timid, and easily discouraged.

The gallbladder is located near the liver, but that doesn’t mean it is only limited to affecting that region of the body… not from a Chinese perspective, anyway. In Chinese medicine, the gall bladder meridian runs up over the shoulders and back of the neck, around to the top of the head and forehead. It is for this reason that the common tension headache is attributed to blockages within the gall bladder meridian. By using needles to access the gallbladder meridian at the proper acupoint, these blockages can be totally alleviated. With this comes longer and more restful sleep, no tension headaches, or dizziness.

So, with all this in mind, here are some ways to be kind to your gallbladder:

  1. Drink a cup of warm lemon water every morning Lemon helps to ease the many duties of the gallbladder. The juice from a lemon will increase urination, which releases toxins faster. It also encourages the gallbladder to produce bile, one of the key acids used in digestion. Additionally, lemons are chock full of vitamin C, which decreases stress and boosts immunity. Why warm, you ask? Warm liquids are absorbed by the body much faster, because less energy is spent trying to convert it to an absorbable temperature.
  2. Use coconut oil This oil is phenomenal if you are experiencing blockages in the gallbladder or liver qui because it does not need to be digested or emulsified by either organ. Your gallbladder cannot process large amounts of fat on regular basis, otherwise you risk health complications including gallstones. Unrefined coconut oil is very easy on the gallbladder because it contains mostly short and medium chained fatty acids, which do not require pancreatic enzymes or bile salts to digest. You can use it as a substitute for cooking oil, or even add a spoonful into a hot drink like tea or coffee.
  3. Eat more sulfur-rich foods Like garlic, onions, and any of the cruciferous veggies (think kale, broccoli, and cauliflower). They will provide you with nutrient necessary in the digestive process.
  4. Do more yoga The use of meditation, breathing techniques, and certain poses in daily yoga have been found to enhance gallbladder function. The most effective poses to help the gallbladder are sarvangasana (shoulder stand pose), shalabhasana (locust pose), dhanarasana (bow pose), bhujangasana (cobra pose), and paschimotasana (back stretching posture). Of course, I would advise you to work with a professional yoga instructor if you choose to use any of these.
  5. Take a Gallbladder flush Combine ½ cup of olive oil with 1 cup of either lemon or grapefruit juice and consume right before bed. Make sure that you take this only during the springtime, because flushes and cleanses are better in the spring when energy is starting to come up.
  6. Avoid greasy foods These foods will clog the gallbladder, subjecting it to additional strain because they are high in fat. It will also likely alleviate stomach problems that you may be having if you are experiencing gallbladder obstruction.
  7. Give yourself time to heal emotionally Chinese medicine reminds us that often those with gallbladder distress are likely to be feeling anger, frustration, and resentment. Do something that will make you feel well: go for a long hike, relax in the sun, rebuild your positive energy supply.

Life is crazy when you are adjusting to having a new little one in your life. This month, I want to talk about one part of your body that gets overlooked when you are up all night: your skin. Dull, tired skin is the root for many common skin ailments, including dark circles, fine lines, and more. Being a mother of three myself, my skin just isn’t always a priority! But one thing I have learned is that healthy skin cannot just be a desire. It has to be an investment in YOUR health and wellness. And trust me, after you have your baby your skin is prone to a whole new set of issues, just based on hormones alone! Let me explain: when pregnant, your level of the hormone estrogen is extremely high. This is why you have perfect hair and perfect skin. After you give birth, this level drops to the lowest of lows. This makes the skin prone to dryness, loss of elasticity, and overall ‘tiredness’. In addition, these high levels of estrogen and another hormone called progesterone cause your liver and kidneys to retain high levels of water and salt. This, of course, is the infamous water weight we love to blame when our midwife or OBGYN asks us to hop on the scale at 38 weeks (can’t they just estimate??). Postpartum, the water weight and salt make their grand exit. I know, it’s a relief! Unfortunately, it can make your skin appear less ‘full’ looking. The good news? In a couple months your hormones will return to normal and so will your skin. But in the meantime, here are some easy ways to help bring some energy back into your skin:


  1. DRINK WATER!! Read that one more time. Staying hydrated is probably the single most important thing that your skin needs from you right now. I know, your doctor is probably already telling you to do this to increase your energy and milk supply if you are breastfeeding your little one. But, the water will help increase cell reproduction, which will improve the overall appearance of the skin. New skin cells=Beautiful Skin.
  2. Ice/cold water Splash this on your face in the morning after a long night up with baby. It will stimulate blood circulation, which temporarily will invigorate your face. So, when your mom/mother in law/great aunt Betsey calls and tells you she’s five minutes away with your favorite green bean casserole, you don’t need to rush around in a frazzled attempt to put face on (though combing your hair wouldn’t hurt).
  3. Exfoliate Between those lovely (absent) hormones and 24/7 new baby care, your skin would be dry even if we didn’t live in Colorado (aka the land of flaky skin). A good exfoliator will stimulate blood circulation in your skin as well as remove dead skin cells that are doing you no favors. Being a local products kind of gal, I love the BioElements Measured Micro grains. When the body is trying to even itself out, the last thing it needs is an overly-active exfoliator with enzymes that cause irritation. This one uses a moisturizing clay base with extremely fine micro granules that gently remove excess dirt and dead cells.
  4. Moisturize your skin immediately after you bathe/shower I know, I know. Showers are few and far between these days, aren’t they? I’m not going to tell you to make extra time for the impossible. However, moisturizing your skin after a warm shower when the pores are open leads to better absorption. Try coconut oil at least once: it’s one of the best skin moisturizers out there, and it’s all natural.
  5. Keep the humidifier on What’s good for baby is good for you too, as it turns out. Make sure you keep your house nice and humid so your skin does not become any more stripped of moisture than it has to be.
  6. Use a hydrating mask My oldest daughter recently gave birth to my first grandchild last fall. She came to me about three and a half weeks postpartum and begged me to do something about her dry skin. It was flaky and just slightly irritated by the lack of moisture. I used the Sanitas Vita-Rich Mask. It contains vitamins A through K to help nourish and strengthen the skin. The aloe and sodium hyalaurenate soften the skin. It is gentle enough to even be used twice weekly (most masks you will find only recommend weekly use), which is great for new mommies with a similar problem to my daughter that could use it regularly.
  7. Use a night cream Night creams are great because they replenish what the skin is lacking while you sleep. Think of it as cementing your status as Supermom (now if only you could figure out how to make all this laundry do itself!). My favorite is BioElements Sleepwear. It has several key ingredients including time released retinol, topical calcium, protein pep-tides, cranberry seed oil, safflower oil, and bergamot oil. Together, the ingredients promote connective tissue, increase elasticity, and ease irritation. Aka the perfect postpartum cocktail (for the skin, that is!)
  8. And finally….sleep when your baby sleeps I know, you’ve heard this one before too. But did you know that the amount of sleep you get has a profound effect on your skin as well? Lack of sleep makes it harder for the skin to stay hydrated and increases stress hormones (can you say breakout central?). So, please, do yourself a favor and get some zzz’s. Its better for your skin, your body, your sanity, the list goes on…


Being a new mother was always the best time (make that plural, I went back for seconds and thirds) of my life. I encourage you to enjoy as much time with baby as you can. One minute they are learning to say ‘mama’ and then you blink…and you have a high school graduate! Trust me, I’ve been there. In my practice I have a passion for spreading the word about the benefits of placenta encapsulation to my patients. It is a service I offer for all of my expectant mothers. Before they can be convinced, most of them like to know a little bit about the process. The placenta must be cut into strips dehydrated for about 24 hours. Then, they are ground up in a processor. At the request of the mother I also add a few additional herbs before encapsulation. The types of herbs depend on her individual needs as a patient, as does the amount added. With the majority of my patients, I find that even the smallest amount of herbs added will go a long way in helping them achieve their postpartum health goals.

You might think you are doing yourself a fair bit of good by delaying the aging process or clearing up your breakout but….the truth is that you are compromising your liver and lymphatic system!
